I had the great fortune to be invited to D's house through a residency I was participating in. "Just your typical artist loft" as he referred to it , was a modern day NYC's artist dream. The kind you only have because you have lived in New York for 40 years and bought it when the city streets of Soho were still tumbled dirty with a collection of homeless people, junkies and the artist's community I read about existing but have never experienced.A slobbery yellow lab met us at the door along with a smaller wirey dog dressed for the occasion in a petite bomber jacket.We left our coats in guest bedroom filled with plastic painted pumpkins although I don't remember it being around Halloween.It seemed quirky and homely filled with antiques and plants.Not what I pictured a prominent artist's house to look like although I've never been to any artist's house that look like what I imagine it would look like, which is a mixture of the self consciousness of starched minimalism and three shades of white.During an informal dinner he sat next to me and talked about his love of animals and activism in protecting their rights as he petted the lab on the head, loving looking up at his owner.I found him gentle in spirit, thoughtful in his words and humble. He seemed to enjoy being around the lot of emerging artist numbering around eleven spread out around his table and couch.If I could describe his energy it would be the fragile strength of a man in his 70s who has lived a full life and the quiet knowing I've felt when amongst the Buddhist monks I have occasionally crossed paths with. I left feeling in love with the city I have chosen to form me for providing an experience I would have never had otherwise.

Two months later I heard of his sudden passing from liver cancer.I will always see him as the sweet crazy haired man with holes in the elbows of his sweater,sliding around in his sock on the loft's concrete floors and be thankful for his grace in extending the art torch in a sense to us. Some of us can strive to be the "father of a movement" but in honesty I think it might be best to hope to be as generous as he.

found old canvas started in 2006 when i was moving,started working on it again and it is a mixture between the pace of dripping syrup in the winter with intermittent breaks of hitting your head on the wall over and over. maybe it needs to go back to its place in the studio pile for a while (or at least until summer is over).

i remember reading an article about a woman who obsessively painted the same canvas for over fifty years,titled "the rose".At the time of her death it had to be removed from her studio with a forklift because if its weight in oil paint. makes sense......

my neighbors newest installation answers the question just how many clowns can you fit on a three wheeled bike mounted onto the top of 1985 steel blue van? three. and a giant oversized clown mask worn as armor over the chest of one of them. this guy is dedicated.i even found this video of him on youtube....fast foward to 1:30 to start the gallery of looks and to see the various clown gear arranged onto cars, motorcyles, etc...

the last two weeks have been kinda blurry, alot of studio time and long walks in snow flurries oranged by the street lights. black gesso-ing new works on paper for upcoming shows in new orleans. working in the studio in a borrowed old bathrobe, channeling my inner-schnabel. this is what i imagined NYC to look like(but usually it doesnt bc its not the 80s or downtown)the world feels complete when the image in your mind merges with the image of reality. sync-ing now........ pictured: post-halloween bounty ready for an installation somewhere. if your listening lend me your space.itll be cool i promise!, dramatic hispanic stickers ready for a forever home on some drawings.

2.sometimes things end to soon.
i am sad i will never hear megan's cackling laughter echoing in the soho walls,the strength of her elfin hands and old soul, or her shoes clunking against the tile while the phone interupted our make-up sessions. i will never get to answer that unanswered email in my inbox i had been putting off to make plans to get together after too long. at the beginning of the world it was said the hum of "om" could be heard, the sound of creation. death is quiet,the absence of anything. i learned this in 2009. people are crying. people are talking,consoling,trying to fill that silence out of fear, awkwardness, or imposed obligation. everything is underwater and slow moving. more then my sadness i am feeling it for those close to her and wishing them peace.

3.sometimes it feels like the end but its not even close.
studio is thick and snail-ish at the moment.

i am singing this all over the house today......

went to my quarterly endocrin. appointment yesterday. upped meds another 25 mgs. as now i've developed the 12 year old tomboy scraped elbow symptom. who knew that this disorder would cause periodic paper elbows? just weird. good thing i've always been partial to watching bruises and scrapes like clouds that float by in the shapes of animals...and that i feel about 12 most days.....today on the way to the post office i felt the beauty of the sun on my bare arms with needle marks on one side and skinless reverse perhaps its the extra tsh in my blood or its just that magic of seeing another fall in NY.

saw Nick Cave at the Norton. we both speak the language of sequins and glitter. it is mostly telepathic communication. think of it like those scenes in movies were you are in a dark forest and someone flashes a mirror that hits the sunlight gently and you know which way is safety. everything then makes sense. being around like minded folks are the sanity saving flashs that helps the world seem more earth and less dark sky.
moms and the elderly appreciated the show also. there is going to be a performance on the 14th. soundsuits sparkling, ocean sparkling, cannot think of anything more cashmere to wrap my eyes with. my mom is going, i am back in nyc. she has always been a sunlit mirror in that sense.

i was looking through d.'s photos from the night and thought i recognized someone in disguise. thank god he didnt see me wearing one blue contact and one natural brown eye. i turned to talk to one of my other friends at the party only to notice he was talking to the musician. i ran to the bathroom to takeout the contact and mini-hyperventilate.after collecting myself i walked out and joined the conversation. later that evening we ended up leaving at the same time. i walked with him to the subway and he asked what i did. i am an artist, do you have any advice? "Follow your own voice".

upon waking up i remembered see him depicted in a dream on a television show. I suppose that is just the kinda person he is. half human, half ethereal dust giving advice on life and style.

this clown lives in my hood and am i obsessed? yep, pretty much. he changes his clown gear seasonally. currently there are three muscle clowns in speedos on top of the van because you know its summer and all. not sure the sexual politics of the the leather daddy chaps or three muscle dudes in mankinis hanging out but any inferences only make it better. thanks Long Island City for keeping it weird.
